本課程旨在提供一套性別、媒體與傳播議題的理論綜覽,將闡明性別觀點的重要性,並藉性別觀點 來理解與質疑媒體再現中存在的性別及種族刻板印象、性別角色與異性戀規範架構。 透過大眾傳播媒體的全球與在地範例,課程閱讀教材將涵蓋多面向的主題,例如:廣告、跨性別再現、 「外籍新娘」現象、網際網路以及社交(交友)網站等。

English Course Description
This course provides a theoretical overview of issues in gender, media and communications. This course will illustrate the importance of using a gender perspective to understand and to interrogate the complex meanings behind gender and racial stereotypes, sex roles and heteronormativity in media representations. Drawing on global and local examples within mass media, course readings will cover diverse topics such as advertising, trans representations, “foreign brides” phenomenon, the Internet and social networking sites.

性別研究國際視野與知能 1. 培養國際宏觀視野 2. 應用跨國性別研究知識 3. 瞭解在地社會與跨國性別研究的比較 4. 提升臺灣性別研究知識於國際學術界的位置
性別主流化之應用與倡議 1. 瞭解性別主流化的相關概念及與應用策略 2. 認同性別主流化之目標與價值 3. 倡議與推動性別主流化之意願與知能

  教學目標
Course Objectives
This course is designed to achieve the following goals:
1. To familiarize students with the research trend of gender communication in the US and in Taiwan;
2. To guide students to understand the ways in which our lives are shaped by gender culture of this society;
3. To allow students to observe, discuss, and analyze the research issues/topics focusing on gender, culture, and communication;
4. To help students realize how communication serves as an important means to make a change to our gender culture;
5. To improve students’ fundamental research skills, including reviewing and analyzing previous literature, writing and presenting research results, etc.

Approach to Instruction
The class will meet as a seminar each week and students will give individual presentations during midterm and final weeks.

Grading
Students who miss more than 6 hours (2 classes) this semester will automatically fail this course. If you are late for more than 15 minutes of the class, you are considered as absent for that class. Should you encounter any emergency, please contact your instructor immediately.
