本課程的目標在研討英國維多利亞時期具有代表性作家之散文及詩歌。本時期適逢社會環境劇變，因此舉凡時代精神特色，價值觀的改變，進化論對宗教信仰造成的衝擊，中產階級及大眾讀者的興起，對文藝創作的影響，工業革命與帝國的關係，及女權意識的覺醒如何促進社會的演進等皆為重大議題。

英文課程概要
English Course Description

The objective of this survey course is to present the significant prose and poetry composed by major authors of the Victorian era. Background studies relating to the characteristics, values, social changes, and controversial issues of the epoch, such as the impact of evolutionism on religious faith, the rise of the middle-class reader through the production of literary texts, the awareness of women’s rights in politics, as well as the relations between industry and empire all form the core of this course.

人文素養	1.英美文學:以年代與藝文思潮為主軸，簡介作者、作品、時代背景及精神，提供學生所需之西方文化基礎知識。 2.語言學: 由基礎的語言學至進階的句法學，學生可以了解語言學的來源發展及用途。提供學生多元應用語言學的途徑，及學生研究與語言學以及英語教學的進修基礎。
英語文能力	1.英語聆聽能力 :增加口語英語溝通能力，理解並紀錄生活、專業層面各種主題的口頭陳述。 2.英語口語表達能力 :具備討論、面談、小型報告、演說與辯論的英語表達能力。 3.英語閱讀能力:培養進階英文、各類文類閱讀能力。 4.英語寫作能力:寫作能力。
傳播應用能力	1.英語教學。 2.翻譯:培養中英對譯能力。 3.媒體英語文:訓練學生將傳播與現今多媒體或翻譯能力與英語語言學科結合，強化學生英語與傳播應用能力，達到語言為用的目標。

教學目標
Course Objectives

1. Survey of several genres of Victorian literature, including fiction, drama, poetry and non-fiction prose
2. Reading literary works critically with the themes of economic change, poverty and social class; sex and gender; race and empire
3. Reading both well-known literary works and some less-taught works that contribute to the glamor of this era

3. Oral report: 30% (a list of 25 novelists / poets / playwrights will be given.)Analysis of one Victorian work or a presentation of your creative production based on one literary masterpiece
