English Course Description
This course is a deep exploration into the themes of community development and cultural revitalization within the context of social welfare. It focuses on the localization trends in social welfare development, examining the operational models and the challenges these organizations face. This course takes a critical look at how social welfare organizations, through the process of competing for social, cultural, political, and financial capital, can effectively contribute to community development and cultural revitalization. Students will explore how these organizations navigate the intricate balance between enhancing social value and fulfilling their responsibilities within the community. This exploration includes understanding how policies shape the sector and how effective management practices contribute to the success of community-focused initiatives. By the end of this course, students will have developed a well-rounded perspective on the intersection of social welfare with community development and cultural revitalization. They will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to contribute meaningfully to this sector, understanding the crucial role of social welfare organizations in shaping vibrant, culturally rich, and resilient communities.

Course Objectives
Emphasizing the importance of managing social welfare organizations, the course delves into the complexities of policy development, financial management, and operational challenges. Students will explore how these organizations navigate the intricate balance between enhancing social value and fulfilling their responsibilities within the community. This exploration includes understanding how policies shape the sector and how effective management practices contribute to the success of community-focused initiatives. In addition, the course will blend theoretical frameworks with real-world examples, encouraging students to engage critically with contemporary issues faced by social welfare organizations, especially in the context of community development and cultural revitalization. By examining various case studies and participating in interactive discussions, students will gain a deeper understanding of how these organizations play a pivotal role in nurturing and preserving cultural identity while addressing social welfare needs.Course Objectives:Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:Understand the Core Concepts: Grasp the fundamental principles that underpin the management of social welfare organizations, including organizational structure, leadership, and strategic planning.Analyze Policies: Critically evaluate the policy-making process and its implications for social welfare organizations, understanding the balance between governmental regulations and organizational autonomy.Identify and Address Challenges: Identify common challenges faced by social welfare organizations, such as funding constraints and ethical dilemmas, and develop strategies to address these challenges.Apply Practical Knowledge: Utilize case studies to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios, enhancing their practical understanding of the field.Develop Critical Thinking: Engage in critical thinking and discussion about the future of social welfare organizations, including emerging trends and potential innovations.

Grading
1. Class participation (10%). I will evaluate the class participation of classmates based on the following criteria: (a) whether the classmates are attending the class (if classmates miss the class, please notify by email in advance, and provide justification and proof);(b) take the class Do students preview the reading materials;(c) Do classmates respect other students;(d) All classwork and exercises have been completed.2. Study Team Formation (10%)Objective: To form a study team of 3-4 members.Criteria for Assessment: Teams will be evaluated based on the diversity of skills and backgrounds of team members, the clarity of their proposed teamwork strategy, and their initial project outline.3. Field Research (20%)Objective: Conduct comprehensive field research relevant to the course themes.Criteria for Assessment: Teams will be assessed on the depth and relevance of their research, quality of data collected, and their ability to effectively synthesize this information in relation to community development and cultural revitalization.4. Podcast Demo (10%)Objective: Produce a short demo of the final podcast.Criteria for Assessment: The demo will be evaluated based on creativity, content relevance, technical quality, and how well it previews the themes and objectives of the final podcast.5. Interview (20%)Objective: Conduct an interview with a professional or expert in the field of social welfare, community development, or cultural revitalization.Criteria for Assessment: The interview will be judged on the relevance and depth of the questions, the interviewee''s expertise, and the team''s ability to integrate the interview insights into their broader project.6. Final Complete Podcast (30%)Objective: Produce a comprehensive podcast that encapsulates the team''s research, findings, and insights.Criteria for Assessment: The final podcast will be evaluated on the basis of content depth, production quality, clarity of narrative, engagement value, and how effectively it communicates the team''s research and findings.Additional Notes:Collaboration: While teamwork is essential, individual contributions within the team will also be evaluated.Deadlines: Adherence to project milestones and deadlines will be crucial.Documentation: Teams must document their process and progress, including research notes, interview transcripts, and podcast scripts.Ethical Considerations: All research and interviews must adhere to ethical guidelines, including informed consent and confidentiality where applicable.
