此課程主要是介紹1865年後之美國文學作家包括Twain, Gilman, Wharton Crane, London Cather, Frost, Pound, Eliot, O’Neill, Fitzgerald, Faulkner, Hemingway, Steinbeck等。當時美國作家們都會把當代的社會，宗教，政治背景描寫在作品中，所以閱讀1865後之美國文學可以讓讀者更了解當時的美國社會轉變及動態。

English Course Description

The main purpose of this course is to introduce works after 1865 in American literature. Authors like Twain, Gilman, Wharton, Crane, London, Cather, Frost, Pound, Eliot, O’Neill, Fitzgerald, Faulkner, Hemingway, Steinbeck, and others will be examined, to bring in all the current issues in their works. This will facilitate learning about the changes in society, religion, politics, and economic changes in the States during that period.

傳播應用能力	1.英語教學。 2.翻譯:培養中英對譯能力。 3.媒體英語文:訓練學生將傳播與現今多媒體或翻譯能力與英語語言學科結合，強化學生英語與傳播應用能力，達到語言為用的目標。

教學目標
Course Objectives

This introductory course aims to offer students basic knowledge of the literary trends, social milieux, and cultural atmospheres from 1865 to the present development of American literature. This course is the second part of the arch of in-depth literacy of American arts and humanities which lead to improvement on students' acquaintance with American cultures, and interpretation of related aspects of American civilization, e.g. American Dream and American capitalism.
本課程為美國文學之第二部分,由1865年南北戰爭結束開始,直至當代.目的在透過文學名著,了解美國文化中的創國後革新的精神,一直到資本主義的美國夢的打造與崩毀.藉以了解資本主義文化對美國與近代的影響,以及知識份子對當代文化的批判.

Approach to Instruction

The course is to be conducted in the form of lecture. The weekly lecture shall center on one specific trend, author, or literary work(s) of the author, ranging from 1865 to the present. In-class discussion is always encouraged in order to facilitate textual understanding and interpretation in the framework of modern times and personal experience. Some discussions may be carried out on our Facebook Class Group.
以每週一主題的方式簡介南北戰爭後美國文學的藝文思潮,配合文學著作的精讀,討論檢視社會,時代,與文學的各種關聯性.內容與進度: 每週依照參考書目擬定課程進度安排,以一週一個新主題作為基本進度; 進行方式: 由教師講授與分組報告為主,以課間討論,隨堂問答為輔;課堂外還有Facebook線上聯繫,修課者必須加入線上社團保持聯繫.

成績評定
Grading

每週點名,遲到-1,缺席-2,滿-8扣考
1. Attendance requirement: late for class: -1, absence: -2. When the attendance record shows -8, you fail.
2. When you meet the attendance requirement, you'll be given a midterm and a final test: Midterm: 50%; Final: 50%.
3. You also need to join the Facebook Group for this class in order to participate in occasional discussions outside class or to hand in homework when necessary.
期初要求: 前兩週務必出席,並加入課程Facebook社團,保持線上聯繫或進行線上問答. 第一階段評分要求及標準: 出席率必須達到標準(上課點名遲到扣1點,缺課扣2點.缺課包含已請假非曠課之事假,病假,連續公假,以及未請假之無故曠課.產假,喪假,系辦通報之住院病假與特殊狀況,不列入扣點計算),扣滿8點或8點以上,不予評分. 第二階段評分要求及標準: 按照表定時間,出席參與各組報告,以及期中考,期末考. 第三階段評分: 達成期初,第一階段,第二階段之評分要求資格者,始得以按照期中考,期末考各占百分之五十之方式計分.
